CleanPing. Clean text from your terminal.

CleanPing rewrites rough text into clean, clear text from your terminal, with any OpenAI-compatible AI. It is open source, under the MIT or Apache-2.0 license.

Why CleanPing

What makes it different

  • You pick the AI.
  • You bring your own key.
  • You can edit with your own system prompt: the instructions the AI follows.
  • You can run a local model, so nothing leaves your computer.

Where you use it

Four ways to use it

  • At your shell prompt

Type a line, press a key, and the line you typed is fixed in place. Works in zsh and bash.

  • Inside Claude Code and Codex

Press Ctrl+G to fix your message before you send it, and see what changed.

  • As a plain command

Give it your text and it prints the clean version.

  • Writing mode

A window where nothing you type is ever run. Ctrl+G fixes your text, Enter copies it.

CleanPing works on Linux and macOS. Windows is not supported yet.

Your choice of AI

Use the AI you want

  • DeepSeek
  • OpenAI
  • OpenRouter
  • A local model with Ollama
  • Any OpenAI-compatible address

Safety

What it protects, and what it does not

  • Your key is kept in a file only you can read.
  • When you use the key at your shell prompt or Ctrl+G in Claude Code and Codex, text that looks like a password or key is held back, not sent. This check is a best guess and cannot catch everything.
  • HTTP redirects are never followed, so your key and text cannot be passed on to another address.

Your text is sent to the AI provider you choose, and that provider can read it. CleanPing is not end-to-end encrypted. Only a local model keeps your text on your computer.

Install on a Mac

Five steps. You do not need to know Terminal.

  1. Step 1
Open Terminal: press Cmd+Space, type Terminal, and press Enter.
  2. Step 2
Copy and paste this first command, then press Enter.
    First command
    curl -fsSL -o install-cleanping-mac.sh https://keynodex.com/cleanping/install
  3. Step 3
Copy and paste this second command, then press Enter.
    Second command
    sh install-cleanping-mac.sh
  4. Step 4
Close the window and open a new one. Type cleanping setup and follow the questions. You will need a key from an AI provider.
  5. Step 5
Try writing mode: type cleanping writer.

What this does: it downloads CleanPing from our GitHub releases, checks the download is complete and unchanged, copies one program into a folder in your home directory, and adds one line to your ~/.zshrc file so Terminal can find it. It changes nothing else.

You can read the script before you run it: it is the file install-cleanping-mac.sh on the latest release.

On Linux

The steps are in the install section of the README on GitHub.
